Climate is changing, and companies need to change too. Therefore, we innovate our way of doing business, thinking about the proper management of our environmental impact.

At Assaí, we work continuously to reduce our carbon emissions, with actions aimed at modernizing equipment, using a cleaner energy matrix, increasing energy efficiency, proper waste management, combating food waste and fostering the circular economy. All this aligned to the promotion of more conscious and environmentally responsible attitudes among our various audiences.

CLIMATE CHANGES

Assaí is committed to the climate agenda, which is why we are working with a plan to modernize technologies and use cleaner energy sources in our operations, aiming for a transition to a low-carbon model.

Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 30% by 2025, based on the total emissions in 2015. The goal is also linked to the variable remuneration of middle and top management. This is an initiative to promote the engagement and commitment of all employees to the challenges of this agenda.

In addition, we closely follow the global goals widely defined for 2030 and 2050 in accordance with COP21 and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

WASTE MANAGEMENT:
RECYCLING AND COMPOSTING

In addition to complying with legal requirements in all regions, we seek to continuously reduce the volume of waste generated at Assaí, ensuring the correct separation, handling, packaging and environmentally appropriate final disposal, which includes recycling, composting and final disposal processes.

As an example, all new stores already start their operations with the process of recycling their waste fully implemented, and today, 100% of our stores destine their waste to companies that perform the recycling of materials.

REVERSE LOGISTIC

At our Recycling Stations, customers can deposit their recyclable waste (such as cardboard, plastic, glass, metal and electronic waste) at specific collection points, which count on partnerships with several companies, public agencies and entities that manage certain classes of waste. As a way of encouraging customers to recycle, we also have partnerships with energy concessionaires, reverting the volume of waste collected into discounts on the residential energy bill.

For hazardous waste, such as batteries and light bulbs – highly contaminating materials for soil and water – we also make collectors available in our stores so that customers can dispose of them correctly. Once collected, the materials are forwarded to the appropriate destination.

REDUCTION OF FOOD WASTE

As an initiative to combat food waste, Assaí has the program Destino Certo (Right destination), where we map and partner with social institutions of Food Banks, which provide the donation of fruits, vegetables and greens that are not aesthetically suitable for sale, but that can still be safely consumed, to partner institutions, also helping to prevent overload in landfills.

CLEAN ENERGY MATRIX AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Our main action to mitigate climate impact related to energy consumption is attributed to the transition from the contractual model for acquiring electricity to the Free Contracting Environment (or Free Energy Market). Assaí began migrating its stores to the Free Market in 2019 and today this category already represents about 90% of the company’s total energy consumption.

In addition, Assaí is also investing in the installation of solar photovoltaic plants for self-generation of energy, taking advantage of unused areas on its roof and increasing independence from the local utility’s supply. In all, there are seven solar power plant units in operation. The Ayrton Senna store unit, in Rio de Janeiro, considered the company’s largest solar plant, has more than 3 thousand photovoltaic panels installed on the store’s roof, occupying an area of approximately 6 thousand sqm.

We also count on energy efficiency actions in new stores, which have 100% LED lighting, besides the glass façade that guarantees a better use of natural light. Assaí has also invested, since 2020, in automated air conditioning systems in some of its stores, using chillers that allow the temperature to be controlled remotely.
